GTA 5 Not Launching: Here's What You Can Do to Fix It

It’s fun that people are now finally able to play Grand Theft Auto 5 on their respective PCs as Rockstar has already launched the blockbuster game’s PC version (in case you didn’t already know).

But with the game’s much-awaited PC launch also came problems that almost certainly made some PC gamers cry.

While others who were lucky enough to be able to play GTA 5 seamlessly, others were stuck with being unable to launch the GTA 5 application at all.

If you’re one of those unlucky ones— not to worry, we’ll help you fix that shortly.

Error: Windows Username

This error is the most common among GTA 5 users. In this type of error, the game application fails to launch properly because of an error on GTA 5’s install path because of a PC username. This is characterized by an error message that says “The Rockstar update service is unavailable (code 1)”— which basically means that the gaming software could not support one of the characters you put to make up the username for your PC.

In cases like this, Rockstar recommends that you use a different admin account on your PC, and its username should be minus the character that the gaming software does not support. Or you cal always create a new admin account, restart your PC and run GTA 5 again. Things should be fixed by then.

Error: GTA 5 Launcher Failed to Initialize

For others who couldn’t launch the GTA 5 social club, Rockstar says all you need to do is uninstall just the launcher itself while making sure that the following files aren’t running in the background:

– GTA5.exe
– PlayGTAV.exe
– GTAVLauncher.exe

Once the uninstall is finally completed, reboot, reinstall, run the launcher, and enjoy! (Note: Make sure to use an Administrator account when doing this)

Error: Failed Zlib Call

This seems to be an error so common among GTA 5 fanatics. The error is encountered by gamers at various times, with some reporting their encounter with the glitch as soon as they launched the game. Others, on the other hand, don’t encounter the error until they are well into the game. When this happens, a message tells gamers to reboot and restart the game— but on Rockstar’s support page, it’s been said that rebooting and restarting the game alone won’t do. Stream users will need to verify the games cache, while users who purchased the game are faced with a more daunting solution. They’ll have to re-download the entire 60GB GTA 5 game, and no fix exists presently.

I don’t like the way games are released with game breaking bugs these days. GTAV launch has been very successful and from what I have heard it doesn’t have a ton of bugs. It has certainly sucked in a lot of my friends. A good example of a bad launch was Mortal Kombat X, which didn’t work at all on launch day, for anyone.

This is far from being a disaster, Viiri. One or two start up problems is nothing compared to Assassin’s Creed: Unity launch. Do you even remember how many bugs and in game glitches they were? It was ridiculous! At first, I wanted my money back, but Ubisoft kind of made it up for it.

Also, this is Rockstar we’re talking about, this game has been delayed so much that I think they actually tested this over and over again they got bored of it.

Wow, these could all be fixed by a hastily released patch with just a log file less than a hundred kilobytes in size. This is sloppy from Rockstar. I’m glad I wasn’t affected by these errors and I got mine to run sommothly yesterday after a couple days of downloading.

Any AAA release on PC or consoles will have its own bugs and problems that users face. I haven’t run into any of these problems myself, but I know others that have. In most cases, I can troubleshoot my own issues, but a lot of people can’t, and these fixes in this article are great resources for anyone that’s not so technically inclined.
